My Love/Hate Relationship with the Luxor - Part Three

So, from the angle of luxury, you can see that I absolutely loved the Luxor. And the initial service was great in the face of a mistake - I got an incredible upgrade for free.

The problem with the Luxor was two-fold.

  1. It’s not set up for business travel.
  2. The service is horrible.

What do I mean by “not set up for business travel”? I mean, no reliable internet service. There’s no wireless run by the hotel. If you stand on your head with your feet lightly touching both the dining room table and the floor-to-ceiling windows, you might be able to get a wireless signal to the crappy independent service that serves half of the Strip.

Half of the time I might also mention. Even when you can get the signal, it’s still horribly slow and unreliable.

There was the option for one laptop to get wired access that they charged separately for, but they didn’t actually have the cords to connect us to the Net. Since I work 100% online, that was Huge problem for me. I checked and double-checked before booking, with someone in reservations who obviously didn’t know what they were talking about.

Which brings us to the service.

When I got the free upgrade, I first asked if everything I could get in the regular room, was available in the upgraded room. They said yes. And it seems like a stupid question, but you’d be surprised how many hotel rooms in Vegas have weird service holes that vary from room to room, that aren’t mentioned in the booking process or on the site.

We were given the wrong directions to get to rooms that were a 15 minute walk to the other side of the hotel.

With bags.

I would have waited, and then paid for, a chap to take my bags to my room if I’d known that the elevator to get to them was in Siberia. I have severe back problems, so the difference between a 15 minute walk dragging bags and a 15 minute walk without changes the quality of my day and mobility.

Not. Happy.

So, you chalk that one up to innocent mistake, and get to the room to order room service. The menu is hideously inadequate. There are restaurants and fast food in the ginormous lobby, however, it’s 15 minutes just to get there. By the time your food came back it would be cold.

Three nights in a row, we were brought the wrong food. And when we called to complain, we were given curt, rude responses. Then the food corrections took an hour. To be fair, the servers themselves were beyond polite and bent over backwards to help in person, though.

Then there was the issue with the room.

When we got the upgrade, I specifically asked “I can only accept this room if I can get the regular rate when I extend my stay. If I can’t get the regular rate for additional days, or I can’t extend my stay in this room, I’d prefer you find me some rooms with the option of both or either
of these.”

I was assured that I could enjoy my stay in that room as long as several weeks, as there were no conflicts. So I extended my stay immediately, took down that person’s name for future reference, and her supervisors.

I’ll spare you the extraordinarily painful process it took to get my room stay extended at all. When it was, they would not budge on the price even a little. So I had to band-aid a stay between two luxury hotels with an off-strip locals favorite.

Where they treated me Much better than I was at the Luxor in every possible way. They didn’t have room service, but their in-room internet was rock solid. They didn’t lose my reservation, the people were nice to me, and whenever I called, I got through and got an answer. This is the only hotel I’d stay at if I couldn’t afford to stay on the Strip or at a premium off-strip location.

As a bonus, they’ve got loose slots, a movie theater and a bowling alley. And I’ll tell you all about it next time.
