My Love/Hate Relationship with the Luxor - Part One

The Luxor at Night

The Luxor at Night

The greatest looking hotel in Vegas (from the outside) is where I had the most horrible experience (from the inside). And yet, when it comes to hotel experiences worldwide, it was still passable, though for Vegas, it was a disgrace they will never live down.

The hotel I’m talking about is the Luxor, yes, the one that looks like an Egyptian pyramid that you can see on the Strip from the runway at McCarren airport.

It’s quite a lovely place from the outside, and back in 07, when I was partly celebrating not having died, and partly in central Vegas on business, I went to stay at the Luxor with a friend.

We were able to book a decent hotel rate online. Then we got there and our reservation was in the system, but not booked. It was March, there were no major conventions in town — there seemed to be no reason why we should have to go without a room.

But in a surprising display of service, our Tower Deluxe Suite was upgraded to a Tower Premiere Suite, at the same price. Since the Pyramid deluxe was less than $100 a night and the Tower Premier Suite, at the time, was triple that, all my complaints seemed to waft away.

You’ll see what I mean in part two when I show you the gallery of photos from the suite. In fact, let’s go do that now, and we’ll come back to this discussion. Then I’ll tell you why, even though the 780 square foot almost-apartment suite was luxurious, I still have beef with the Luxor.
