Sam’s Town - The Local’s Casino Favorite - Part One
I can tell I’ll have to write several posts about Sam’s Town. It’s definitely not my first choice if I’m going to Vegas to stay in luxury hotels and have fun. But if you’re counting your pennies, can’t stay on the Strip, or have a gap between over-lapping reservations, you can’t beat Sam’s Town.
Here’s why:
1. Be relatively near the Strip but not on it.
Technically, it’s what we insiders would call way off the strip but they’ll shuttle you over. I’d say travel time in traffic would be 15 minutes. That way you can experience the Strip without paying to stay there. Being off the Strip is also an advantage if you want to control the noise and activity level of your trip.
It’s easier to veg out and avoid crowds if you’re off the Strip, but if you’re going to be spending a lot of time in your room, such as on a honeymoon, I’d suggest The Palms, The Orleans, or for a spa/relaxation/luxury off-strip time, the Red Rock.
(Whole post coming up in the next few weeks about my Red Rock experience. Ooo la la.)
2. The prices. Their King suite go from $270 down to $170 a night if you reserve at least two weeks in advance. And if you book online at their site, you can also get the regular rooms as low as $33 a night.
Ours had two queens, a TV, standard bathroom, and a pretty view at night. There’s a special birthday rate, and if you have a local ID card, call and ask about specials for Vegas residents.
3- The dining experience. I don’t just say food because some places there will entertain you while you’re eating. There are the standard fast food places where you can get pizza or a burger. There’s a buffet and a steak house as well, and all types of good food you’d expect to find in Vegas .
My favorite by far is Willy and Jose’s Cantina, an award winning Mexican restaurant with excellent service and incredible Mexican food. It’s an award-winning establishment, and whenever we were anywhere Near Sam’s town we wanted to go there.
The only thing about this place is that it’s got tricky hours some parts of the year. When we most wanted to visit, they were closed, Monday and Tuesday if memory serves. But this isn’t the year-round set up, so call first. You don’t need a reservation but it sucks to have your mouth all ready for the place and to get nada.
4- The alternatives to gambling activities.
If you get tired of gambling, you’ve got a few shops, the movie theater, and bowling.
5- The people.
You almost can’t help but run into locals there, pretty friendly ones too. Dress like you’re going to a movie in your home town, or you’ll stick out like a sore thumb - they keep it real casual, not Vegas casual, at Sam’s Town, even at night.
